Dublin City Council is pleased to announce that construction works on the Meath Street Public Realm Improvement Scheme are scheduled to begin on 9 February 2026. This major upgrade project will enhance the streetscape of one of Dublin 8’s most historic and vibrant retail areas.

The improvement scheme will deliver a more attractive, accessible, and pedestrian friendly Meath Street. Key features of the project include:

•    Widened footpaths to create additional space for pedestrians and on-street activity

•    Planting of up to fifteen new street trees

•    Upgraded public lighting to improve safety and ambiance

•    New street furniture, including public seating

Lord Mayor of Dublin, Councillor Ray McAdam, welcomed the commencement of the scheme, “Today marks an important step forward for Meath Street and for Dublin 8. Meath Street has long been one of the Liberties’ most lively and much loved streets, rich in character, community and local enterprise. This public realm scheme will enhance the street for everyone who uses it, creating a safer, more welcoming and more attractive place to live, work, shop and spend time.

I want to thank residents, businesses and traders for their patience and cooperation as works get underway. When complete, this investment will make a real and lasting difference for the Liberties, strengthening Meath Street as a great city street for years to come”

Dublin City Council has appointed Cairn Construction as the main contractor for the works. Construction will be carried out in 13 phases, beginning with the eastern footpath between The Coombe and Carmen’s Hall. From there, works will progress northwards along Meath Street.

Initial activity will commence the week of 9 February with the excavation of trial holes to confirm the location of underground services. Phase 1 works will begin on Monday, 16 February, marking the start of full construction activity.

The entire project is expected to take approximately 20 months to complete. Cairn Construction will be responsible for maintaining regular communication with residents, businesses, and stakeholders throughout the duration of the works to ensure timely updates and minimise disruption.

Dublin City Council thanks the local community for its cooperation and patience as we work to deliver a renewed and improved Meath Street for all who live, work, and visit the area.
