PN leader was ready to take Constitutional positions in partisan arena, PL says
The Leader of the Opposition has once again showed how populist he is and that "for partisan and immature purposes" he was ready to involve the Head of State in the political arena, the Labour Party said Friday.

"Because he is weak, he was not willing to continue and try to achieve his target as his predecessors did," the PL said, referring to the suggestion made by Alex Borg for the President to preside over talks on the appointment of the new Chief Justice.

On Wednesday, Alex Borg had to backtrack and did a U-turn after leaving a country suspended until the last minute when he was about to create a Constitutional crisis, the PL said.

The following day he was given a Constitutional lesson about how he cannot play partisan games with Constitutional positions. Now one hopes that he continues a serious dialogue with the Government who is willing to continue the discussions in the national interest on the appointment of a new Chief Justice, the PL added.

In recent years, Prime Minister Robert Abela has debated and succeeded in reaching an agreement on several Constitutional positions with the predecessors of the current Leader of the Opposition, including on the post in question where there was no Constitutional obligation of the two-thirds vote. Maturity is key in these situations, the PL concluded.
